Based in Paris, Tsukimi Gallery specialises in Japanese decorative arts from the 20the century to the present days : a fascinating period during which artists and craftsmen (the distinction is difficult to draw in our field) succeeded in balancing traditional craftsmanship and modern sensibility.
Nourished by a unique artistic history and driven by the tireless creativity of its artisans, the high quality of contemporary Japanese works can also be explained by the early establishment of public policies designated to preserve traditional skills that hence survived in Japan while often beeing forgotten elsewhere. The laws of 1950, amended in 1954, were meant to protect the transmission of knowledge and the continuation of techniques valued for their historical and cultural significance. The emergence of the concept of intangible heritage was a turning point which has determined how Japanese craftsmanship is valued until today.
It is this convergence between technical mastery and artistic innovation that we aim to highlight in our collection. The form, weight, color and surface of each piece contribute to the expressive potential of tradition materials. Once places in a room, these works bring not only a decorative value but also a presence that, hopefully, will invite the viewer to pause and contemplate.
